December 28, 2009

Congratulations to Nick Lewis who graduated from Middle Tennessee State University on Saturday, December 19, 2009, with a history major, business education minor. Nick is employed at Segal Middle School in the Murfreesboro City Schools. He is the son of Lisa Anderson and the grandson of Dot Waffird.

The Christmas Eve Service at HCN now seems weeks ago but remains a wonderful memory. I stood in the Sanctuary foyer and watched people come through the doors in groups of tens and twenties and wondered if we could ever seat everyone. I love events which pack us into the Sanctuary and stir our memories. Preston Hunt expressed his nostalgia to me and made me love him more. Is it possible to have sung “Joy to the World” with more authority than when we opened the series of carol hymns? Thanks to Willard Brinkman, Michael Waller, and David Flint for providing expert instrumentation. Thanks to Sam Green for leading the congregational singing. Thanks to Catherine Segars for the “Breath of Heaven.” Thanks to Billie Ragland and Shirley Maschinski for preparing the communion elements and then cleaning up afterwards. Thanks to Shane Tarter, Daniel Smith, and Jake Resor for transporting chairs for extra seating to the foyer. Thanks to Aaron and Caleb Foster who remained after service to pick-up, straighten up what the rest of us had left. Rondy Smith made it her personal responsibility to see that the candles were assembled with drip guards before distribution. Lifting our candles to heaven may be one of the most dangerous and wonderful things we do at Christmas.

The One morning worship service in The Center on Sunday at 10:00 AM escorted us to the other end of the campus. I so appreciate all of the first service people who made the transition. Dr. Greathouse and Judy Greathouse were two of the first to arrive. It is the only service of the year when there are no nurseries, no arranged childcare, no other activities functioning in any area of the facilities. I commend the children and the families who made it work. Thanks to Rondy Smith, Ken Jewett, Shane Tarter, and Carol Waller for sharing the preaching role with me yesterday. Bill Stricklin has already sent an email to brag on all of them. I liked standing in the lobby of The Center after service and getting to talk with people like Jerry and Mae Beavers. First service people normally watch me hurry off to second service. We got to talk about the joy of being grandparents.

The Genesis Sunday School Class hosted Room-in-the-Inn at HCN on Saturday night. Ten homeless men from downtown Nashville were provided a safe, dry place to sleep; delicious food to eat; a safe place to shower and wash clothes; a place to sit and talk with people who cared. Hosts and hostesses included Tiffany Mathias; John, Erika, Jared, Anthony, and Alyssa Mannen; Stephan, Susan, Jameson, and Isabella Scappaticci; Bob and Rhonda Ward; Kathy Orrick; Paul Stonecipher; J.D. and Angela Hisey; Dianne and Ricky McNeese; David and Yori Taylor; Yori's son and his fiancé', Khena Kara and Kelli Beecher; Carol Clem; Bobby, Rondy, Daniel and Kyle Smith; David, Shelley, Emily and Evan Flint; Bill and Melva Strickland; Dan and Cathy Preston; Tes and Feli Tigabu; Barry, Alex and Kaina Whitehead; Alex's father, Philippe Gehin; Dan Scott; John Alderman; Jill Satterlee; Webb Trojan; Marvin Heath; Lawana Jones. Thanks for representing all of the rest of us as you cared for others in the name of Jesus.

These are the last days of 2009. A new year arrives this week. Allow me to mention three things buzzing in my head regarding completing and beginning:

  • If you need to catch up end of the year giving to the church, it is not too late to do so. You can either bring a check by the church or mail it to the church with a December 31, 2009, date written on the check. Several months ago, I wrote a note in one of these letters expressing my confidence in an investment in this local body. I want to reaffirm that confidence. This church is effectively reaching a generation of young people for Christ. We do not just talk about it. We put our money where our mouth is. Giving or not giving dictates a lot of what happens around the church. Pay attention.

  • I am convinced that six young people need to go on the trip to Africa in 2010. The cost is high. I need six sponsors who would commit to giving $2,500 so that a teen could raise the remainder of the funds for their trip. It is a life-changing opportunity. If you feel the slightest bit interested, please call me at 847-3335 and let me talk with you.

  • The Wesleyan Covenant Service is an annual service of confession, worship, and commitment that we observe at HCN in the first Sunday of the new year. The service contains preaching, congregational singing, significant vocal offerings. People leave the service asking if we can meet again before a year is up to account for what was just started. We return to regular schedules this Sunday, January 3, 2010, at 9:00 AM in the Sanctuary and at 10:15 AM in The Center. All Sunday School Classes also return to the schedule.

Somewhere in the midst of all of your good intentions for 2010, I hope God is speaking and I hope you are listening. He greatly desires to live and operate at the center of your life. What needs to change in you? What priorities need to shift? What relationships need attention? I am praying for you, my brothers and my sisters. And I am depending on your prayers for me. It is the only way to survive.

In Christ Jesus,

Pastor Howard

December 21, 2009

Michael Follis, Matt Follis, and Morgan Follis were baptized on Sunday, December 20, 2009, at 5:00 PM in HCN’s Sanctuary. Michael is a student at Trevecca Nazarene University. Matt is a student at Middle Tennessee State University. Morgan is a student at Lakeview Elementary School. When Michael decided some weeks ago to declare his faith in baptism, he asked his brother, Matt, to join him and their sister, Morgan, decided she would join them. The entire family of the Corinthian jailer was baptized together. It is appropriate that two brothers and a sister would be baptized together.

The Live Wire and Building One presentation on Sunday, December 20, 2009, at 6:00 PM in The Center was classy, tasteful, Hebraic, Gregorian, black and white. It was more different than anything else they have ever done. I kept waiting for something else to break out and the character of the service was maintained from beginning to end. I applaud you, Students. I wish I had names of students and I do not. I do have the names of the Adult Leaders: Diane Cater (director), Christine Helm, Jillian Forcum, Beth Fox, Michael Waller, David Flint, Donny Jackson, Hayley Hill.

The Christmas Eve Service is scheduled for Thursday, December 24, 2009, at 7:00 PM in the Sanctuary. The service includes scripture, lots of congregational singing (led by Sam Green), communion in the pews, the lighting of the Christ candle, the passing of the light. See you there. Arrive early.

The Sunday after Christmas is Sunday, December 27, 2009, with one service at 10:00 AM in The Center. Please notice this is ONE service and the time is 10:00 AM and the place is The Center. The service is planned to keep the interest of all ages and will include all of the pastoral staff members including Sam Green.

Last night concluded the Advent Fellowship Services in the evening. Your willingness to participate with food amazes me. Thank you to everyone who helped with set-up, clean-up, service. Thank you to Women’s Ministries President, Lisa Anderson, who coordinates it all.

You are greatly loved and appreciated. Thank you for every card and kindness extended to me and my family, every staff member and their family, to every person in need. We are distributing gift cards and cash this morning. Merry Christmas.

In Christ Jesus,

Pastor Howard

December 14, 2009

“A Night of Alleluias” provided incredible vocals and instrumentation from the HCN Choir and Band to share on Sunday, December 13, 2009 in back-to-back services at 9:00 and 10:30 AM. Dr. Sam Green had planned to be present to direct the production but instead found himself a patient in Centennial Medial Center. So, Tammy Tarter stepped into the director’s role and did a tremendous job. Thanks to the HCN Band of Randy Layne, Ricky Gore, Michael Waller, Donny Jackson, Paul Bolling, David Flint, and Graham Scott who made it all sound easy. Thanks to the following HCN Choir members: Herb McMillan, Ryan Means, Bobby Smith, Ken Stegall, Tom Stephens, Joy Bradley, Marvin Heath, Gary Helm, John Jordan, Ken Koon, Art Kurtz, Paul Vann, Renita Amity, Lisa Anderson, Jo Apple, Dorinda Biggs, Joyce Clevenger, Jessica Dozier, Kristi Dozier, Christi Fite, JoAnn Jackson, Melinda Knott, Pam McNeese, Miriam McMillan, Beverly Sharpe, Tammy Tarter, Carrie Wagner, Deborah Walter, Dalene Barnett, Janeene Davis, Julie Foster, Beth Fox, Marilyn Keener, Sandra Kurtz, Anna Plummer, and Betty Willis.

I failed to tell you that Sam and Keli watched both presentations via Skype set up by Ken Jewett. Dr. Tim Green, Dean of the School of Religion at Trevecca Nazarene University, wrote the narration for “A Night of Alleluias” and was present to narrate each service.

What talented, gifted people God has gathered at HCN and how fortunate we are to share in the offering returned to him.

Four beautiful, young, talented ladies provided an evening of Christmas vocals on Sunday evening at 6:00 PM. They are Dorinda Biggs, Beth Fox, Suzanne Karr, and Catherine Segars. Their styles and tastes are poles apart but their voices are exquisite. They even let us join in on four songs in the middle. I personally appreciate the effort and commitment required of each to prepare for the evening and to Randy Layne, Paul Bolling, Graham Scott, and Ben Tyler for providing live instrumentation. Thanks to all of the people who cooked a pot of soup or brought a salad. The good food eaten before service made the good music better.

Pastor Ken Jewett has attempted to secure a regular place of service for our youth at the Nashville Rescue Mission for over one year. The time may have come. For several weeks, Livewire Students who are available have assisted in serving Friday lunch. They are Josh Cater, Caleb Foster, Bethany Ruff, Emily Paddon, Jacob Paddon, and Jameson Scappaticci. LiveWire, College, and Mom2Moms also collected seventy-seven boxes for Operation Christmas Child that go to children around the world in spreading the gospel.

Congratulations to Jamie Durham who graduates from Western Kentucky University on Saturday, December 19, 2009, with a BS in Marketing. Her grandmother, Rebecca Dickens, says it seems like only yesterday that Jamie was in Mommy Dot’s class.

Schedules return to normal this Sunday with Sunday School fully operational and morning worship services at 9:00 AM in the Sanctuary and 10:15 AM in The Center. The evening includes a baptismal service at 5:00 PM in the Sanctuary; pizza and pasta in The Center at 5:30 PM and the LiveWire and Building One Christmas Program at 6:00 PM in The Center. Families are asked to bring pizza OR pasta, a dessert, a large drink.

I finished something on Sunday night that has taken me four years and three months to complete. I submitted the last paper for a graduate degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. As a life-long learner, I have taken some kind of undergraduate or graduate course since 1970. When I started this degree, I thought that previous graduate work I have done most of my life would transfer. None did. Like me, it was too old. So, I started over. I took two weeks of vacation each year to be on campus in Pasadena and did the rest in cohort groups. Some weeks, the pressure seemed overwhelming. That is when three or four people who pray for me would rev up the asking. God always provided. I am looking forward to some unfilled space in my life for at least six months. Learning is richer at 57 years old. I hope I am delaying dementia.

I look forward to being with you on Sunday.

In Christ Jesus,

Pastor Howard

Thank you to Beth Rouse, Christy Barfield, Kristin Jordan, and Tammy Jones for directing the drama and music for the musical. Thanks to Jo Apple for accompanying the children in preschool. Thanks to April Swoner, Brandy Wood, Brian Biggs, Robert Sullivan, Jody Scott, and Betty Willis for caring for details, sound, lighting, staging.

Thanks to the following adults who cooked and served breakfast at the Saturday Christmas festivities: Carrie Knox, Alene Gill, Billie Ragland, Joy Bradley, Pauline Harbin, and Shirley Maschinski.

Encore Theatre’s “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” completed its three week run on Sunday, December 6, 2009. These were the HCN people who were involved in this very successful production: Diane Cater (director); Shirley Maschinski (assistant director); Donna Shankle (co-producer); Jo Apple (pianist and Mrs. Clausing); Sara Waller (Gladys Herdman); Evan Flint (Ollie Herdman); Teddy Joyce (Elmer Hopkins); Holly Barfield (Doris); Emily Flint (Beverly); Emily Mowry (Angel Choir). Congratulations.

The Mt. Juliet High School Band and Chorus presented their annual Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 4, 2009, with WOW reviews from those in attendance. HCN Band Members were Dalton Stephens, Ben Mabry, Nick Elder. HCN Choir members were Connor McCoy, Brent Washing, Whitney Gonyea, Clarrisa Davis, Kelsey Kile, Reed McCoy. Dalton Winfree played in the Jazz Band.

This coming Sunday is December 13, 2009. It has a different schedule than other December Sundays. The only Sunday School Class meeting on this day is Early Christians who meet at 8:00 AM. There are two morning worship services, both meeting in The Center. First service meets at 9:00 AM as normal. Second service meets at 10:30 AM (fifteen minutes later than usual). This is due to the length of the service and time needed to empty and fill the facilities, parking areas. The HCN Choir and Band present “Night of Alleluias” in each service. It is an encore performance from several years back when some of you may remember our choir joined multiple other Nazarene church choirs for a performance in the Ryman Auditorium. It is a powerful service of worship and praise with a magnificent narration written by Dr. Tim Green, brother of our Sam Green. Tim will narrate in both services. If Sam feels well enough, he greatly desires to direct the choir and band. At this writing, he is in the hospital recovering from an elevated temperature. We will do what is best for Sam.

I write a very similar paragraph every Christmas and Easter, but these words are true. If you will take the time to invite unchurched family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors, to one of these two services, they are likely to come with you. It is an opportunity for them to meet your church in a non-threatening way and to allow the Lord to do his work his way in his time. But it takes a phone call or a conversation from you to get the ball rolling. This Sunday. December 13, 2009. 9:00 OR 10:30 AM. Great choir. Great band. Great opportunity.

Diva is actually a good word. It means celebrated female singer, used to describe a woman of outstanding talent. Negatively, it can mean prima dona. So, if you and I decide that we are speaking in a good way, I have an official announcement to make. There are four divas from HCN who are providing Christmas music this Sunday evening in The Center at 6:00 PM. They are Dorinda Biggs, Beth Fox, Suzanne Karr, and Catherine Segars. I love to hear each one sing. You will also. Could we try a difficult thing with this? Our Advent Fellowship for this evening is the Soup and Salad and Dessert menu. Because it has worked so great in the last couple of weeks, could we plan to begin moving through the serving lines at 5:30 PM and begin the concert at 6:00 PM? That keeps us from eating so late and keeps the children satisfied. Families, bring a pot of soup OR a large salad to share plus a dessert and a large drink. Again, please notice that we will begin to eat at 5:30 PM.

In Christ Jesus,

Pastor Howard

November 30, 2009

Congratulations to Paul and Glenda Bolling on the birth of their son, Liam Finnten Bolling, on Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at 8:12 AM at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. He weighed 8 lbs 9 ozs and measured 21 inches in length. Liam is the brother of Caeden. Glenda was scheduled for inducement later in the morning when Liam decided it was time to come on his own. I held Liam on Friday morning and had my picture taken with him. I have history with this young family. I watched their courtship; presided at their marriage; and now greet their babies. We bless the Lord who has blessed Paul and Glenda with a child to love and nurture in His ways.

The Breadbreaker Sunday School Class hosted Room in the Inn at HCN last Saturday night. Jon Alderman transported the ten men to and from the downtown campus to our campus. Saturday supper, Sunday breakfast, Sunday sack lunches were provided by Carl, Janeene, Clarissa, and Mahaliah Davis; Bill, Julie, and Nicholas Groover; Tim, Treila, and Hannah Garrett; Jay, Christy, Holly, and Jackson Barfield; Rusty Waffird; Ted Brown; Rodney, Tammy, Daniel, Rachel, and Joel Jones; Beth Rice; Bryan, Catherine, Afton, and Bennett Segars; Paul and Pam Stonecipher. Ten men were housed and fed; given an opportunity to shower and wash their clothes; given a safe, warm, dry bed to sleep in; treated with respect and compassion in the name of Jesus.

I know a neat story about Bryce Poole. Several weeks ago, the Encore Theater presenting “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” needed a quick study for one of the roles about to be vacant for a day. Director Diane Cater asked Bryce to come and rehearse just in case. What Diane suspected might happen did happen and Bryce stepped in to speak the lines and act the role with excellence. I thought you would like to know.

For three years, on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, members of the congregation have stepped to the microphone in morning worship services and shared their testimonies of Thanksgiving. Four testifiers did so on Sunday: John and Melinda Knott, Jake Resor, and Sam Green. John and Melinda told us of the crisis they faced last June when John nearly lost his life and/or both legs when an unsuspecting tumor growing in an upper chamber of his heart began to break apart and shred time bomb clots to his legs. I hope you heard them say that the surgeon who saved John’s life and legs “happened” to be at the hospital for another procedure that day. Jake Resor told us what it was like to be a middle school kid who came along with his mom to a new marriage, new sisters, new house, new city, new school, new church. Now Jake works at that church in his first ministerial assignment with middle school kids. Yes, sometimes Christ does save our lives through the church. Sam Green told us what it was like to receive a diagnosis of acute leukemia and then to process chemotherapy which takes your hair and puts you to walking in hospital hallways with a pole (behind, not in front of you). Sam is mid-way in treatment. He receives one more round of super chemo, then rest. In January, he receives the bone marrow transplant from his brother, Steve. Mercies are new every day. You told me how much you loved the day. I am glad. Thanks be to God. I loved it too.

The Advent service last evening was simple and filling. The soups and salads and desserts were delicious. Ken Jewett read scripture. Shane Tarter said the story was like a papa bear reading to his family. Dot Waffird carried the light into darkness and lit the first Advent candle.

Morning services for this Sunday, December 6, 2009, is back to normal with preaching in the morning. The Children’s Musical and Christmas Program for pre-school through grade four begins at 6:00 PM in the evening. We will have lots of guests, so bring one of the following: a tray of sandwiches OR a tray of veggies or fruit. Also, bring a plate of finger desserts: cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and a large drink. Food will be received in the kitchen via the hallway service windows and set up in the hallways while the program is presented.

God is doing a mighty redemptive work on the earth. I ate lunch with a college student last week who asked if we could schedule a baptismal service where he could be baptized. He said it was time to let his friends know who he was.

I hope God is real to you and talking your ears off.

In Christ Jesus,

Pastor Howard

Thanks to the Saturday Samaritans who served on Saturday, November 14, 2009, and made a difference in properties of people in need throughout the church. The group was led by Marvin Heath and included Kent Kile, Ken Willis, Kevin and Joel Daugherty, Rob and Michael Mathias, J.D. Hisey, Jeff and Josh Cater. Marvin actually took a tumble off a ladder and fell ten feet before landing on his side. Thankfully, he suffers only sore ribs.

Congratulations to Adrie Brown and Hunter Steinmetz who were nominated for the Hoby Award at Mt. Juliet High School. MJHS teachers were asked to nominate sophomores who demonstrated the following characteristics: charismatic personality; courage to speak one’s beliefs; courage to challenge authority; strong decision making skill; outstanding oral and written skills; critical and creative thinking; sensitivity to the needs of others; participation and interest in community service activities; good academic record. One sophomore was then selected to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference, a stellar leadership conference for local youth. Adrie Brown was the recipient.

Sam Green received GREAT news last week. His bone marrow biopsy showed he is in complete remission from acute leukemia. The news was so good that his doctor admitted him to Centennial Medical Center last Friday to begin the last of two rounds of powerful chemo. The purpose is to destroy any remaining cancer cells which may be lurking in his body. He will be discharged this Wednesday, in time to spend Thanks-giving with his family.

Ruby Ann Barnes died last Friday, November 20, 2009, in Livingston, Tennessee. She is the mother of Ron Barnes and the grandmother of Gatha Barnes Frizsell. Ruby Ann lived her life in the Livingston, Tennessee, area, keeping a farm and family going with her husband and son. For the last fifteen years, she has hosted the Hermitage Senior High Students on that farm for their fall retreat. While Ron is the actual host, Ruby Ann allowed it and invited the kids into her home for a visit to indoor plumbing. She loved the company. This is a tribute to a lady who loved people and shared her home and property in a way that was a blessing. If you ever attended one of those retreats, these are addresses for Ron and Gatha to send your condolences: Ron and Illona Barnes, 3217 Dinah Court, Nashville, TN, 37214-2305…Gatha and Mike Frizsell, 649 Des Moines, Hermitage, TN, 37076.

Often someone in the church approaches a pastoral staff member to ask how to let the church body know they have a tool to lend or an appliance to sell or children’s clothing to share. Or someone needs a personal reference for an electrician or plumber or carpenter. Pastor Rondy Smith has attempted to pass information knowing that we needed a better way. Rob Mathias, a member of HCN, recommended Google Groups, a board used by his business to pass information. He visited our staff meeting this morning to demonstrate how it might work for the church. The site allows a secure environment without sharing email addresses. Staff members will experiment with the site for several weeks and then extend the option to the church.

Thanksgiving Day is this Thursday. By the time you get this letter, it may be passed.

All that I am grateful for begins with God and the church. God found me early, talked to me often, never gave up on me. People at my church loved me and wrapped their arms around me and prayed me through more than one trauma. My conversion, baptism, call to ministry, marriage, ordination, and dedication of my children took place in the church.

It is the place I love and the people I love. I am grateful for my wife, Anna; my children, Kelly, Brady and Michelle; my grandbabies, Kennedy and Leyton. I am thankful that we love each other. I am grateful for decent health at 57 years. I am thankful I still like to learn. I am glad for friends of long years; medium years; this year. I am a rich man.

In Christ Jesus,

Pastor Howard

November 16, 2009

Brian Helstrom flew into town on Saturday evening and I picked him up from the Nashville Airport. It dawned on me as I drove to Donelson Pike that I had heard Brian speak on three to four occasions but did not remember what he looked like. I stood at the bottom of the escalator on the baggage floor and waited for someone to come down who looked lost. I found him. I served as his chauffeur over the weekend, transporting him from the Hampton Inn in Mt. Juliet to church and back. He was as real and genuine one-on-one as he was in services yesterday. I drove him to the airport at 4:40 AM today.

I think most of you found a friend in Brian. He is fresh and inspirational and ethically challenged. He has never found a kingdom tool he could not hide or sneak across a border. The video of the African children responding to the Jesus Film was nearly overwhelming, was it not? We have heard and overheard the story of the crucifixion and resurrection so often that we almost do not hear it anymore. Those kids heard it. They made us hear it. People who do not weep were weeping. Someone told me they worked really hard not to cry loudly. Brian loved worship. He said it had been a long while since he had spoken in a church with a choir instead of a praise team. He loved the choir.

When we did evaluations in Pastoral Staff Meeting this morning, Ken Jewett mentioned that he had felt rushed at the conclusion of the service when people were asked to commit a pledge for missions and that he did not have a very good idea of exactly what he was committing to: missions or the Jesus Film ministries. I print this because I think Ken’s point was valid. While response to Brian was good, response to pledging was not. The goal for our church is $65,000 which pays for our local church’s responsibilities to world missions for the 2009-2010 church year. It supports 750+ missionaries in 175+ world areas. Spencer and April Baggott, members of HCN, are two of the 750+ missionaries assigned to the Horn of Africa Region in the Sudan, Congo. We give to missions on a weekly, monthly, annually, or one time basis. It is not too late to participate. Cards are available in the foyer and lobby.

Dr. Sam Green was back in the house, home from fifty-five days in Centennial Medical Center. It was great to see Sam and to have him lead congregational singing and the choir. We still have to keep our hands off due to germs. He is only half way through his treatment for acute leukemia and this is the interim.

The Thanksgiving Dinner on Sunday evening provided some of the best food I have ever eaten. I was sad that I had gone at the end of the line and could not return for seconds since I was sitting at a table in front of the speaker. Turkey is not one of my favorite foods but I ate some turkey that made me want more. I also ate some of Keely Mullins potato casserole that was still hot and delicious. Thanks to the Early Christian Sunday School Class which set up tables and chairs, organized food, and with the exception of one other family, cooked all of the turkeys and hams.

Room-in-the-Inn came to HCN for the first night of the 2009-2010 season. Paul Stonecipher directs us in this ministry to the homeless assisted by his wife, Pam. Two Sunday School Classes provided food and hosting: New Horizons and the University Class. Thanks to Donna Shankle, Rick Person, Susan Pilgreen, Marsha Shultz, Beverly Mitchell, Erna Plaxco, Barbara Douthit, Diane Brimm for delicious food preparation. Thanks to Lisa Anderson for assistance with breakfast. Thanks to Jon Alderman for driving the van for transportation to and from downtown Nashville. Thanks to Daniel Smith, Jake Resor, Hayley Hill, Justin Smith, and Ken Jewett for chaperoning and cleaning up in time for Sunday School Classes.

Pastor Rondy Smith served on the leadership team for a national “Come to the Fire” women’s conference held at Nashville First Church last weekend. Speakers, singers, assistants from HCN included Yori Taylor, Dorinda Biggs, Beth Fox, Alex Whitehead, Jody Scott, Betty Willis, Beth and Maggie Hollingsworth, Carol Waller, Valerie Marsh, Teresa Vines. Forty-one HCN women attended including: Anna and Michelle Plummer, Charlayne Trotter, Jill Satterlee, Traci Haydel, Feli Tigabu, Lisa Kelley, Kristi Mabry, Beth Seaman, Becky Evans, Mary Alice Butler, Lisa Anderson, Beth Rouse, Angela Hisey, Jillian Forcum, Cathy Preston, JoAnn Jackson, Jo Apple, Joyce Clevenger, Tiffany Mathias, Kathy Orrick, Joy Bradley, Missy Mize, Sandra Hunt, Holly Steinmetz, Dawn Parker, Deborah Coppedge, Stacey Joyce, Amy Walvoord, Miriam McMillan, Amy Ruff, Dottie Brown, Doris Jordan, Shelli Russell. Great, great work occurred in the lives of these women. Watch and listen for what God is doing.

Pastor Ken Jewett led the fifth and sixth grade LiveWire Students in Climb Nashville and a Lock-in last Friday evening. He was assisted by Hayley Hill, Jake Resor, Daniel Smith, Alan Elkins, Mike Miranne, Jon Paddon, Tanner Webb, Jim Waters, Michael Follis. Climbers were Trevor Hunt, Josh Elkins, Mikaila Duck, Hannah Garrett, Ryan Mahoney, Alex Houser, Emily Paddon, Jared Mannen, Rachel Jones, Rachel Thimell, Corey Miranne, Callie Dilts, Ryann Amity, Mackie Daily, Matt Lucas, Allyson Huffman, Kellie Rose, Jessie Joyce, Avie Joyce, Kevin Helm, Landon Cable, Andrew Vines, Bryson Fox, Nathanael Jackson, Sara Drummond, Ronnie Moore.

Wendell Marlowe submitted his resignation as plant manager effective Sunday, November 15, 2009. When Wendell started the position, he lived around the corner and has moved twice since. He is a middle school principal and husband and father and grandfather and ready to do more of those things. At this moment, we are dividing the responsibilities for the job between several people and groups. Richard Hysell, Wendell’s assistant, is out of commission with pending surgery and recovery. Thanks to Wendell for the hard, thankless job of cleaning floors and setting up chairs, cutting off lights, locking and unlocking doors for the last four years.

In Christ Jesus,

Pastor Howard

November 9, 2009

Congratulations to the four believers who were baptized on Sunday, November 8, 2009, in the 5:00 PM service in the HCN Sanctuary: Caroline Brasfield, Brooklyn Fox, Christian Rhodes, Victoria Hampton. Caroline, Brooklyn, and Christian are elementary children and Victoria is a young mother. Each confessed their new life in Christ and then was immersed in baptismal waters by Pastor Carol Waller or Pastor Rondy Smith. We rejoice in their faith and their participation in the sacrament.

All the blood work numbers came together for Sam Green today and unless something changes, he will be discharged from Centennial Medical Center this Wednesday. His platelets are actually higher than when he entered the hospital. The bone marrow trans-plant comes in January 2010. We pray for a complete cure from this acute leukemia.

Bryson Fox is an HCN Middle School Student who formed a special connection with the Nashville Rescue Mission two years ago and has raised over $4,500 to help feed their homeless clients. This Thanksgiving, the mission will feed a hot meal to each person who walks through their doors for $1.92 per person. Bryson and his sister, Brielle, would like to raise $1,000 by Wednesday, November 18, 2009. If you would like to assist, write a check to the Nashville Rescue Mission or place cash in an envelope to give to Bryson or Brielle.

Congratulations to Preston and Grant Phelps who have both advanced to the championship game in their divisions of Tennessee Youth Football Alliance. Preston is on the Mt. Juliet Pee-Wee Gold Team and Grant is on the Mt. Juliet C-Gold Team. Games will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2009, at Charlie Daniels Park.

Steve Kelley led a Men’s Ministry Breakfast on Saturday, November 7, 2009, in The Center. Approximately sixty men ate together and then listened to life stories from Marvin Heath, Darrell Moody, and Dan Scott. Ken Koon and Bobby Smith served as the morning chefs. The food was delicious and the stories were humbling and inspiring.

Ray Render completed directing the Upwards Flag Football Season under the lights on Saturday, November 7, 2009, on the west end of the church campus. Rather than participating in entertainment with a banquet, each player and cheerleader participated in a night game with all the excitement of a crowd. Thanks to Ray for leading the season. Coaches, refs, and players will be listed in next week’s letter.

I mentioned the kids who tried out for the play in the message on Sunday. Well, those kids would like to invite you to see them in “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” presented by Encore Theatre located on Lebanon Road in Old Hickory. Make reservations or purchase tickets at 598-8950 or www.encoretheatre-company.org. HCN’s Diane Cater is the director.

Brian Helstrom directs one of the most effective evangelistic ministries in the world, a.k.a. Jesus Film Ministries. I have heard Brian speak on four occasions and each time, he inspires and motivates me to help change the world. Brian speaks at HCN this Sunday, November 15, 2009, in both the 9:00 AM and 10:15 AM services. Please be present and listen to stories of how God is changing the world.

November 2, 2009

Last week was a big event week. The Candy Parade hosted close to two hundred children in The Center on Wednesday evening. It is one of those events that seems to have no spiritual content until you see it through the lens of the church providing the safety of community for children. It is one more memory added to a thousand that will cause our children to know: my church loves me. Plus, where else can you get a bag of candy filled to dragging without walking five miles in a soggy neighborhood?

The District Superintendent met with the Church Board and me on Thursday evening to report and discuss the results of the official survey and vote of the renewal of pastoral relations. The vote was 17-0 for continuing the current pastoral arrangement for four more years. The vote speaks well of a mature and unified church. Thanks for the recognition of staff on Sunday morning in each service. You are very kind.

The Heritage Men’s Choir of Trevecca alums sang in sacred concert on Friday evening in The Sanctuary and despite the rain that began to pour at 6:00 PM, the place was packed. Bob Bishop, Mark Greathouse, Herb McMillan, Rodney Neighbors, and Ken Stegall represented HCN in the choir. The selection of music was masterful. People have asked for this to be an annual event. Is that possible?

Don and Vilanda Merritt placed flowers in The Sanctuary on Sunday in recognition of their Twenty-eighth Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations on the keeping of promises.

Congratulations to Ashlynn Lounsbury and Maxwell Mullins who attend David Deaton Karate in Mt. Juliet. On October 24, 2009, both won first place in sparring and in kata. Karate encourages maintaining academics, positive attitudes, respect, and responsi-bility.

Clocks returned to normal on Sunday morning and the saving of daylight fled. The extra hour made the whole day better. I think it even helped Sunday School attendance.

HCN is unique in so many ways that it is hard to list any. One of the examples of what makes the church great includes the people who in the midst of doing ministry receive a Spirit-anointed idea to help or honor others. Glenda Perkins and Diane Cater taught a class on the book of Ruth to a group of young women lately and then had the idea of helping the girls to sponsor a tea for all of the widows, the Naomis in the church. They sent out personally decorated invitations for last Sunday’s afternoon event in The Parlor. Pastor Carol Waller said everything about it was classy. I hope every widow felt the esteem of the Ruths.

Sam Green, HCN’s Pastor of Worship, continues to rest and wait at Centennial Medical Center as his body responds to the chemo treatments for acute leukemia. Blood count numbers have to balance at a particular place before he is discharged for home and a first of 2010 bone marrow transplant. Sam’s doctors tell him this should be the week the numbers move. Pray that everything that needs to happen to make Sam well will fit in place this week. Keli’s Green’s mom and dad have moved into their house to watch over the girls until Sam and Keli return home.

Thanks to the crew of volunteers who continue to supply leadership for music/worship needs in the absence of Sam. Thanks to Tammy Tarter, Donny Jackson, John Jordan, Paul Vann, Ricky Gore, Dave Flint, Paul Bolling, Randy Layne, Kevin Terry, Graham Scott, Jay Barfield, Willard Brinkman, Michael Waller, Worship Choir members. Thanks for honoring Sam with your labor. Thanks for making the difference in our worship.

Pastor Howard

Pauline Hall regularly attends the first service of HCN. She is the mother of Dalene Barnett and a long-time resident of Trevecca Towers. At 93 years of age, she is moving to Ohio to live near her son. I will miss Pauline and her kind emails to me regarding preaching. She is an ordained elder in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ.

Congratulations to Heather Miller, a scholarship basketball player on Vol State’s Women’s Team for 2008-2010, who signed last week to play for Trevecca’s Lady Trojans in the fall of 2010. Heather will be reunited with her coach, Gary Van Atta, and her teammate/ sister, K.C. Van Atta. See Heather’s signing ceremony in the glass board in The Center.

Congratulations to Will Miranne who competed with his theatre class from DCA in a one-act “Flowers for Algernon” in the Tennessee State Theatre Festival in Cookeville on Saturday. The team placed first out of six high schools (all large except DCA).

Congratulations to the Fall Softball Team who won their last and only game of the season on Monday, October 19, 2009. Team members were Eric Owens, Brandon Shepard, Seth Alderman, Grant McCoy, Reed McCoy, Daniel Jones, Brian Brinkman, Dalton Winfree, Hunter Steinmetz, Toby Haydel, Philip Caulkins, and Kyle Russell.

A group of very talented ladies from HCN’s Women’s Ministries sponsored the second Seasonal Flair last Thursday evening. Pastor Rondy Smith sang their praises in pastoral staff meeting this morning. These were the women who made it all happen: Rachelle Reigard, Jennifer Neely, Kylee Koon, Kim Vann, Carol Clem, Natalie Lutz, Dottie Brown, Feli Tigabu, Janice Jones, Diane Cater, Jill Satterlee, Traci Hollandsworth, Beth Rouse, Lawana Jones, Stacey Sweeten, Marilyn Keener, and Beth Seaman.

Building One Senior High Students made their annual pilgrimage to Barnes Farm in Livingston, TN, for a fall camping retreat last weekend. Ron Barnes opens his arms, cabin, and family farm to our teens every year and cooks an audacious breakfast for them on Saturday morning. Steve Kelley served as special speaker and Bobby Smith served as chef, both Building One favorites. Chaperones were Pastor Shane Tarter, Carolyn Washing, Brady Plummer, Shaun Lewis, and Rondy Smith. Student campers were Anna-Laura Green, Sophie Green, Ashley Crues, Adrie Brown, Morgan Harold, Katelyn Houge, Christy Fite, Sara Vaden, Clair Burgette, Cassie Hunt, Presley Stinson, Alex Hamer, Jessica Dozier, Daniel Jones, Hunter Steinmetz, Taylor Steinmetz, Lucas Houge, Jonathan Tigabu, Brian Brinkman, Robert Luther, Reed McCoy, Grant McCoy, Dalton Winfree, Justin Jones, Toby Haydel, Eric Owens, Brandon Shepard, Bret Washing, Matt Bastin, Kyle Smith, Josh Cater, Jonathan Mowry, and Thomas Sharpe.

Senior Adults and Friends made their annual pilgrimage to the north Georgia mountains last Thursday through Saturday. Brenda Agee planned and organized the entire event and missed the action due to other responsibilities. We were housed at the Country Inn and Suites in Dalton. We ate both evening meals at Edna’s in Chatsworth. We visited the look-out at Fort Mountain State Park in Cohutta. We shopped and ate lunch in Ellijay and then toured the apple houses down Highway 52. Thanks to Charles and Nancy Jewell for driving their truck to transport our luggage. Thanks to Tommy and Mary Ann Boner for driving/hosting the van. Thanks to the rest of the gang for sharing the fudge, fruit slices, grapes, tangerines, pretzels and whatever else you dreamed of eating: Joy Bradley, Mary Alice Butler, Marsha Shultz, Dot Waffird, Pauline Harbin, Anna Plummer, Billie Ragland, Shirley Maschinski, Betty Willis, Alene Gill, and Carrie Knox. They let me go with them.

HCN’s Fall Fish Fry was big and food was the best yet. The fish was golden fried. The homecut fries and hushpuppies were delicious. The slaw and beans were the perfect sides. Would you believe that none of the fried foods were put in oil until 4:15 PM? How did they cook that much food in that length of time? Wayne McNeese ran the show and recruited his team. These are the people to thank: Jason Vines, Kevin Daugherty, Kris Neely, Dan Scott, Tim Garrett, Tom Stephens, Ken Willis, Paul Stonecipher, J.D. Hisey, Ronnie Marsh, Ken Koon, Jon Nelson, Marty Peach, Kenny McNeese, John Jordan, Phil Stinson, Bobby Smith, Webb Trojan, Glen Detwiler, Ken Elkins, Mike Anderson, Rick Person, Dean Beach, Jonathan Beach, Ricky McNeese. Kitchen workers who prepared all set-ups and food delivery were Pam McNeese, Lisa Anderson, Dianne McNeese, Kylee Koon, Joyce Clevenger, Pam Stonecipher, Kim Vann, Jennifer Neely, Chandler Scott, Jill Satterlee, and Beth Vines. The Genesis Sunday School Class handled all table set-ups and clean-up afterwards. Ken Willis, Glen Detwiler, and Dan Scott provided the wood for the bonfire. I think it would please everyone to know that Beth Vines and some of our young people transported all of the leftovers to the Nashville Rescue Mission. Beth said the mission was excited to receive such amazing food.

Beth Vines serves as the Director of Human Resources at Remarketing Solutions. Currently, there are three jobs posted for immediate need including District Manager, Skip Trace Investigator, and Vice President of Operations. If you are qualified and interested in any of the jobs, contact Beth at 762-2210 or email her at beth.vines@ remarketingsolution.com.

I look forward to Sunday.

In Christ Jesus,

Pastor Howard

EverPraise opened both worship services yesterday with voice and spirit. They are eight students from Trevecca Nazarene University presenting the gospel in musical story. The two young men who played guitar and the percussion box are twins: Parker and Jordan Guthrie from Bradenton, Florida. They are freshmen. Their dad and mom are extremely talented musicians who served on pastoral staff with us when the boys were born. What gracious, talented young men they have become. One of our young senior high students posted on Facebook after church that he was switching from drums to box. One of our freshman college students, home for fall break, told me he forgot how much he missed his church.

HCN’s Fall Fish Fry is served this Sunday, October 25, 2009, at 5:00 PM on the west end of the campus. Wayne McNeese, CEO for the cooking team, requests a VIP meeting of all the cooks at 10:00 AM in the Church Kitchen. This is the fifteen minute block for transitions between services. These are the people who make or break the evening. Please be there to receive schedules and information from Wayne. The Fish Fry is a simple all church feast of fried fish, homecut fries, hushpuppies, slaw. The church provides the first courses. Everyone else is asked to bring their favorite dessert and a large drink. Wear outdoor clothes. Dress for cool weather. Bring outdoor games to play and outdoor chairs to sit in. This is not a come play in the gym night. It is a get yourself outside and talk to somebody night.

When a local Church of the Nazarene calls a pastor, the church board does the interviewing, and eventually the church membership (15 years of age and older), does the voting. That vote extends for a term of two years. After two years, the district superin-tendent meets with the church board to determine if the relationship between the pastor and church remains positive. If it is positive, the church board votes to extend the term of service for two, three, or four more years. If it is not positive, the church board discusses ways to resolve conflict with the pastor and may vote to call a vote of the congregation on continued pastoral relations. HCN extended the initial call to me to pastor the church in August of 1995. Two years later, in 1997, the church board extended the call for four years. Another four year call was extended in 2001 and 2005. It is 2009 and time for another evaluation. Dr. Larry Leonard, Superintendent of the Tennessee District, meets with the HCN Church Board on Thursday, October 29, 2009, at 7:00 PM in the Center Parlor. Church Board members are Tony Dozier, Kendell Poole, John Reigard, Aaron Foster, Steve Kelley, Matthew Mullins, Beverly Sharpe, Jennifer Neely, Scott Perkins, John Mannen, Phil Jordan, David Hunt, Brad Houser, Scott Steinmetz, Mike Miranne, Donna Shankle, Marvin Heath, and Kristi Mabry. If you would like to communicate with one of these board members regarding the continuing or discontinuing of current pastoral relations, consult your church directory for phone numbers or call the church office. All of this sounds very negative and makes people nervous and wonder what they do not know. The truth is: there is nothing negative happening and this is simply a required, official announcement. Results from the board meeting will be announced on Sunday, November 1, 2009. We all pray for God’s will to be made known to us.

The Pastoral Staff Team visited with Sam Green this morning at Centennial Medical Center. Sam is having a good day, free from nausea, bored, ready to be on to the next good thing that brings wholeness to his body. He is up and smiling and acting like Sam. Pray that Sam remains free from infections and viruses as his blood counts balance where the doctors desire. Pray for the safety and health of Keli, Anna-Laura, Sophia, and Bella.

Continued thanks are extended to Tammy Tarter, Donny Jackson, and every instrumenta-list, band member, choir member, and praise team member who faithfully provides the ministry of music in Sam’s absence. I believe it is a testimony to the character of the church that we continue to worship and serve and be present during the illness and absence of a talented, gifted brother.

I look forward to Sunday.

In Christ Jesus,
Pastor Howard

October 12, 2009

Congratulations to Andrew Richard Nelson and Katie Nicole Stonecipher who were joined in marriage on Friday, October 10, 2009, at 6:30 PM in the sanctuary of Hermitage Church of the Nazarene. Katie is the daughter of Paul and Pam Stonecipher and the sister of Christy Stonecipher. Christy served as Katie’s maid of honor. The reception was held at the Old Hickory Country Club. Andrew’s groomsmen were the coolest, most attentive group of attendants I have ever witnessed on their wedding day. It was like having seven best men. Katie was a beautiful, jubilant bride. We celebrate the joining of this couple in marriage and the love they bring to share with one another for the rest of their lives.

Congratulations to Sarah Harris on her outstanding accomplishments in the game of golf. She was named “Player of the Year” in the Girls 15-18 Masters Division of the Tennessee Golf Association Junior Tour, winning the year end Tournament of Champions event with a final round of 72. She won the Division 2A High School Regionals (east/middle Tennessee) as an individual and as a member of her DCA team. She won the Division 2A High School State Tournament last week as an individual and as a member of the DCA team. She shot 75-72 (+3) during the two day event. In the process, Sarah was commended for her display of good character, composure, and sports-manship. Congratulations to Sarah Harris, State Champion!

Congratulations to Dan Preston, nominated to become the Chairman of the Tennessee State Kairos Committee. The election is Saturday, November 14, 2009. Dan’s heart is serving the Lord in ministering to prison inmates throughout the southeastern USA.

Jamell Emerson was recognized in second worship on Sunday as he prepares to leave for the completion of his military duty in Iraq. He told me to tell you that your prayers for him have been effective. Four times his squad was attacked at the threat of his life and four times, his life was spared.

Sam Green begins the fifth and last day of his chemotherapy treatment this afternoon and completes it in the morning (Tuesday). The pastoral staff team visited with Sam at lunch. He had an elevated fever and did not feel well. Pray that the chemotherapy destroys the remaining leukemia cells in his body; that Sam stays free of viruses and infections; that he begins to feel better. He could be home by the end of the week for the next waiting period. Follow Sam’s daily progress at www.samandthegreens.com.

Diane Cater placed a wicker basket in The Center Lobby on Sunday for the purpose of collecting dolls for a particular service project. It was there through Sunday morning services but gone by the evening. If you know where the basket was relocated, please call the church office at 847-3335 to let someone know. Thanks.

EverPraise is an eight member, young adult ensemble from Trevecca Nazarene University. The group visits HCN this Sunday to share in the musical section of worship in each service. They will provide the opening song and the offertory before preaching. It is always good to have visitors from TNU. Greet them with me.

There are a series of events just ahead in the life of HCN that would be easy to miss if you do not get them on your calendar NOW. Would you take a moment and look at your schedule and make room?

  • Seasonal Flair is a once per year event for ladies where ideas are shared to warm your heart and home for the holidays. It is scheduled for Thursday, October 22, 2009, at 6:30 PM in The Center. I believe in the ladies who are presenting this activity. Cost is $5 with tickets to be purchased in the Foyer and the Lobby.
  • Candy Parade is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at 6:30 PM in The Center. It is an invitation for preschool and elementary children through grade 4 to wear costumes (appeal to parents for appropriateness), and to parade through the Center to receive treats from church families. All adults are encouraged to bring candy for 200+ children and to find a chair in the circle to share your goodies.
  • Fall Festival Fish Fry is the largest all church social event at HCN. Wayne McNeese leads teams of cooks in preparing fried fish, hushpuppies, and homecut fries outdoors. The date is Sunday, October 25, 2009, at 5:00 PM. The location is the west end of the church campus.
  • Heritage Men’s Chorale visits HCN on Friday, October 30, 2009, at 7:00 PM in the Sanctuary. The chorale sings sacred hymns and compositions. It is composed largely of TNU alumni. You will recognize a number of men from the HCN congregation.

I look forward to a return from fall break schedules which keep us scattered. I like routine and I miss you.

In Christ Jesus,

Pastor Howard

October 5, 2009

The preaching series in the biblical book of James ended yesterday. Many of you have talked to me after services; called me on the phone; sent emails to let me know that you listened closely. I am hoping that the mirror in which we saw ourselves in chapter 1 remains with us so that our lives are changed, so that we do not merely listen to the word but do the word. Are you talking to the people who have wandered?

Thanks to the crew of volunteers who continue to supply leadership for music/worship needs in the absence of Sam Green, our Pastor of Worship. Thanks to Tammy Tarter, Bryce Fox, Donny Jackson, John Jordan, Paul Vann, Emily Sullivan, Ricky Gore, Dave Flint, Paul Bolling, Randy Layne, Graham Scott, Jay Barfield, Willard Brinkman, Michael Waller, Worship Choir members. Not one person has told me “no” when I have called to ask for help. Thanks for honoring Sam with your labor. Thanks for making the difference in our worship.

Sam Green had his head shaved last Friday to get ahead of the hair that was letting go due to chemotherapy. His smile remains big. The pastoral staff team visited with Sam and Keli this morning. We wear masks and choke and talk. One way to make a preacher shut up is to make him wear a mask to catch his hot air. Sam has the second bone marrow biopsy tomorrow (Tuesday), to determine if all the leukemia cells are gone. Crazy as it seems, Sam could be back with us in the not too distant future while he awaits the bone marrow transplant. Pray for Sam.

Kris Hostetler deploys on October 20, 2009, for his second tour of duty with the US Army in Iraq. We took the opportunity to pray for Kris on Sunday during second service while he was in town. Connect the face with name you will hear called for the next year.

Congratulations to Bret Washing on his selection to the Middle Tennessee Vocal Association Freshman Honors Choir. There were twenty slots open for freshmen and Bret was the third chosen.

Congratulations to Taylor Gonyea, a member of the 2009 Homecoming Court, at Mt. Juliet Middle School.

Paul Stonecipher led the Room-in-the-Inn organization yesterday for the 2009-2010 season of hosting dates. At this writing, we host on nine evenings. Needs remain for the following items: disposable razors, chap stick, toothbrushes, combs, underwear (L, XL, 2XL), tee shirts (L, XL, 2XL, 3XL).

Tim Garrett called this morning to say his plant is hiring again through the end of October. If you need work, call Tim at 350-7630.

If you see Jill, Gaby or Nick Satterlee at church, your eyes are not deceiving you. They decided they could not live without us and have returned home to Tennessee. Their house is rented for a year so they are living with Franky and Missy Mize. Jill returns as our Wednesday night chef this week. Welcome home. You are loved.

A Baptismal Service is scheduled for Sunday, November 8, 2009, at 5:00 PM in the sanctuary. In the New Testament Church, all believers were baptized as immediately as possible. Paul baptized in the middle of the night. Stephen baptized on the side of the road. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ and need to be baptized, please call the church office to be placed on the list of candidates.

If you missed someone from worship yesterday, it may be they are out-of-town due to the Wilson County School Break which began last Friday. You may miss them for several more Sundays as the break continues for two weeks. While part of our family is resting and recreating, please know that all things continue full throttle at HCN. I plan to be here each Sunday and it would be nice to see you.

In Christ Jesus,

Pastor Howard

September 28, 2009

Yesterday was a stellar day of worship. The HCN Worship Choir and Center Band presented back-to-back concerts at 9:00 and 10:30 AM in The Center. It was the first time I had heard the music. I realized one-third of the way into the first service that I was grinning from ear-to-ear. That music was happy. The band included Ricky Gore, Dave Flint, Donny Jackson, Randy Layne, Paul Bolling, Graham Scott, and Michael Waller. They were on. The choir included Herb McMillan, Ryan Means, Bobby Smith, Ken Stegall, Tom Stephens, Dalton Stephens, Mark Washing, Bryce Fox, Marvin Heath, Ken Koon, Art Kurtz, Dalene Barnett, Julie Foster, Beth Fox, Anna-Laura Green, Sandra Kurtz, Anna Plummer, Emily Sullivan, Betty Willis, Renita Amity, Lisa Anderson, Jo Apple, Dorinda Biggs, Joyce Clevenger, Jessica Dozier, Kristi Dozier, Christi Fite, Keli Green, JoAnn Jackson, Tiffany Matthias, Pam McNeese, Miriam McMillan, and Brenda Waffird. Tammy Tarter stepped into the place of Sam Green and directed vocals. Tammy is a music teacher for Metro Schools but most importantly is a woman of great character and spirit. Ricky Gore set the timing for the band and the talent flew from there. Paul Vann, Beth Fox, Dorinda Biggs, Catherine Segars, and Emily Sullivan delivered the powerful solos. Sam Green sang via pre-recorded video and backed live by Keli, Anna-Laura, Sophia, and Bella. Stephan Scappaticci preached the “That’s My King” recitation. Declaring our faith in Christ through communion centered the day. Thanks to every person who stepped forward and followed through with commitments to sing and to play and to lead in the absence of Sam, who prayed for us in his Centennial Medical Center room. Sam received the news at 10:30 AM on Sunday that his brother, Steve, is a 10 out of 10 match for a bone marrow transplant for him. Meanwhile, in the drama of all that went on at the HCN campus on Sunday, Missionaries Spencer and April Baggott watched from their home in Africa via SKYPE. They wondered if they could visit every Sunday morning.

Seventeen LiveWire Students attended the District Pre-Teen Retreat at Trevecca Community Church last Friday night, Saturday morning. Retreaters included Anna Stephens, Eddie Mahoney, Marileigh Mabry, Abby Elkins, Bethany Ruff, J.D. Hall, Cameron Davenport, Hannah Jackson, Niki Graves, Matthew Helm, Olivia Garrett, Taylor Shoemake, Isaac Houser, Morgan Houser, Holly Baughman, Drew Silvernail, and Bryce Poole. Chaperones and chauffeurs included Pastor Ken Jewett, Alan Elkins, Kristi Mabry, Hayley Hill, Jake Resor, and Daniel Smith.

Congratulations to Anna-Laura Green who served as a junior class representative to the Homecoming Court at Mt. Juliet High School on Friday night. Anna-Laura was escorted by Braden Maphet.

Congratulations to the Mt. Juliet High School Marching Band of Gold which competed in the Columbia Marching Invitational on Saturday, September 26, 2009. The Band won Grand Champion 1st Place Band, 2nd Place Field Commander, 1st Place Percussion, 1st Place Color Guard. HCN Band members include Dalton Stephens and Ben Mabry.

I think often of the awesome responsibility you and I have to lead this incredible group of children and young people to a personal relationship with Christ and into a Christlike lifestyle. I think of the pastoral staff team we invest in for our children, middle school students, high school students, university students. I think of the properties purchased and the facilities we have constructed which allow us to reach our community with opportunities for worship, for fellowship, for recreation, for ministry, for mission. When I think of a place I want to support with the financial resources entrusted to me by God, I cannot think of a place more worthy than the local church I attend, Hermitage Church of the Nazarene. Occasionally someone tells me where they give their tithes, their offerings other than HCN and I wonder what it is that is not exceedingly evident that this local church needs and deserves their support. I wonder if I need to tell you more often. You know, don’t you? I am grateful for those who understand the need to give so that the witness for Christ in this place is strong.

In Christ Jesus,

Pastor Howard

September 21, 2009

Fall Concerts for the HCN Worship Choir and Band are scheduled for this Sunday, September 27, 2009, at 9:00 and 10:30 AM in The Center. Please notice that second service meets at 10:30 AM and not 10:15 AM for this one week. Policemen will be available to direct our entry and exit to and from the parking areas to Saundersville Road. Music offers a wonderful opportunity to worship the Lord and to reach out to others who need an entry way into the church. Invite your unchurched neighbors, co-workers, relatives to attend one of the concerts with you on Sunday. Then trust the Holy Spirit to speak and draw them to Christ. No Sunday School Classes meet on Sunday.

Sam Green, Pastor of Worship at HCN, was admitted to Centennial Medical Center on Friday, September 18, 2009, to begin chemotherapy for the diagnosis of acute leukemia. By Day 14, the leukemia should be in complete remission and the next stage should bring a bone marrow transplant. Two of Sam’s brothers were tested on Friday as possible donors. The Green family is writing a blog to document this journey. Check it out at www.samandthegreens.com. Pray for Sam.

Thanks to every person who is stepping up and accepting the responsibilities we rarely think about because Sam cares for them so ably and completely. Thanks to Tammy Tarter for leading the choir. Thanks to Richard Knox and Dorinda Biggs for leading congregational singing. Thanks to the Choir and Praise Team and Band and Instrumen-talists for staying the course and providing the ministry of music for Sunday mornings.

Pray that the Lord will give us wisdom regarding how we proceed with music leadership in Sam’s absence. Filling roles for one or two or three weeks is one thing. Filling that place for months or seasons is another thing. While Sam gets well, the church continues to worship and to find and to do God’s will. When Sam is ready and able to return, his place will be reserved and waiting.

Welcome to the fifteen newest members of HCN who joined at the close of worship services last Sunday: Jo Apple; Sam, Angela, Kenzie, and Rebecca Eiseman; John and Melinda Knott; Susan Pilgreen; Keith, Stephanie, Chelsea, and Christian Rhodes; Brandon Shepard; Myrna Shurtleff; and Eddie Witkowski. They were born in Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama. Their spiritual backgrounds include the Church of Christ, Cumberland Presbyterian, Presbyterian Church of America, Methodist, Southern Baptist, and Free Will Baptist. One has been here five years. Some have been here five weeks. One is a senior high student. One is a university student. One is a nurse. All claim the name of Christ. We are better because we belong to each other and bring to the body the gifts which glorify Christ and his church.

If you are thinking about or planning to participate in MissionAfrica 2010, the next meeting takes place in The Sanctuary this Sunday, September 27, 2009, at 4:30 PM. It is time to discuss deposits and dates for the first deposit. Reservations have been made by World Servants at the Serena Mara Lodge in the Serengeti to close our two week project.

Robin Jewett is an instructor in the Physician’s Assistant program at Trevecca Nazarene University. She and her students volunteer for health related seminars and health fairs at the Mercury Courts across from the university on Murfreesboro Road. Two weeks ago, Robin issued a challenge to her students to stock the pantries at Mercury Courts with a One Ton Grocery Run. She thought the health of the residents would improve if they were eating a healthy, consistent diet. On Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at 12:30 PM, that challenge resulted in 4,332 pounds of food being delivered to Mercury Courts. Congratulations to Robin and to the Trevecca PA Students for stretching beyond themselves and then delivering the goods.

Fall Festival Fish Fry is rushing toward us on October 25, 2009. Wayne McNeese needs a crew of people who have outdoor fryers to volunteer cooking fish, hushpuppies and fries. Start talking to Wayne. More than six hundred people ate with us last year.

In Christ Jesus,

Pastor Howard
