May 26, 2009

Our church staff team and office staff took the Memorial Monday off with the rest of the nation and enjoyed a day apart. I worked on academic things from 5:30 to 10:30 AM; ate lunch with my family at Red Robin (Kennedy’s favorite restaurant); read the paper; took a nap; watched television; took a nap; checked on things in the office; and ate dinner out with friends. Our daughter, Kelly, hosted guests for the long weekend from the office in Bermuda where she worked for three years. Her guests were Brits and Canadians who expressed thanks for the holiday. Would it sound snooty if I told you I was thankful for the holiday? I am thankful for the men and women who have served our country with their time and their energy and their lives.

Thank you to the Men’s Cooking Team of Wayne McNeese, Ken Koon, Mike Anderson; the Women’s Prep Team of Pam McNeese, Lisa Anderson, Kylee Koon, Dot Waffird; and the Set-up, Clean-up Team of the New Life Sunday School Class for all the service given to the rest of us at Sunday Evening’s Memorial Day Cook-Out. The food was outstanding and the fellowship was better.

Congratulations to Brian Brinkman who played doubles in the Division IIA Middle/ East Tennis Regional for Davidson Academy and came in second place. Brian and partner will play in the State Tournament at MTSU. He also plays singles for the team.

The LiveWire/Building One Dinner Theatre not only had lots of teen presenters but multiple adult preparers. They were Tammy Jones, Jill Satterlee, Tim and Treila Garrett, Jillian Forcum, Stacey Joyce, Jason and Beth Vines, Jonathan and Sarah Paddon, Holly Steinmetz, Aaron Foster, Sandy Mahoney, Sandra Hunt, Teresa Vines, Jeff Cater, Kathy Drummond, Mike and Darlene Miranne, Glenda Perkins, Michael and Carol Waller, Ken Stegall, Gary and Christine Helm, Brian Biggs, Beth Fox, Beth Hollingsworth, Jo Ann Jackson, Buddy and Kristi Mabry, John Reigard, Kris Neely, Herb McMillan, Charlotte Rose, Jody Scott, and John Jordan. One teen was left off the list last week: Andrew Vines. My apologies to Andrew, who happens to be a great kid.

I have reported on the Mt. Juliet Men’s Baseball Team for several weeks. Last Friday, May 22, 2009, the team played Farragut High School at MTSU for the State Class AAA Championship Game, and lost 2-1. Although the loss was grievous, Farragut is an exceptional opponent, having won five titles since 2003, and is ranked 13th in high school baseball nationally. A photo of Logan Dalton made the front page of The Tennessean Sports Section on Saturday, May 23, 2009. Congratulations on an exceptional season to Logan, Taylor Haydel, Matt Sedgwick, Landon Trotter, and Kyle Smith.

Frequently in a class I teach, I am overwhelmed with the combined wisdom of the many minds and hearts. I use up lots of markers writing down the pieces of what people share in Sunday School. I am also overwhelmed with the beauty of what people write. The last paragraph I wrote in last week’s pastoral letter touched a nerve with several of you. I had a voice mail left at home and I received an anonymous letter from someone in this morning’s mail. It is so deeply beautiful that if I knew who wrote it, I would beg you to let me print it. So, to the author, whoever you are, thank you for writing. Your words were like honey from heaven to me.

This Sunday, May 31, 2009, is the last of the Church Year. It is my responsibility to gather up the statistics of the church to report to the district and general church. It is also a fifth Sunday when we invite the Middle School LiveWire Students and the HisKids Elementary Students to join us in second worship. It is also the Sunday that we recognize our 2009 High School Graduates. Make it your business to be present and participating and congratulating.

I look forward to being with you in the presence of the Almighty.

In Christ Jesus,
Pastor Howard

Congratulations to Jeffrey Butler and Suzanne Wood who were joined in marriage on Saturday, May 16, 2009, at 12:00 Noon in the sanctuary of Hermitage Church of the Nazarene. Suzanne is the daughter of Harry and Donna Wood. I had the privilege to lead this young couple through weeks of premarital counseling and then to preside at their ceremony.

Congratulations to the Mt. Juliet Middle School Boys Soccer Team which won their district tournament on Monday, May 11, 2009. Three HCN boys are members of the team: Justin Angle, Levi Carlton, and Nathanael Jackson.

Congratulations to Meagan Lavery, one of twelve people receiving Outstanding Athlete/Scholar Awards in Wilson County Schools. Meagan was awarded the single scholarship out of the twelve awards.

Congratulations to Taylor Haydel on a story book game played on Friday, May 15, 2009, in Mt. Juliet High School’s Class AAA Baseball Sectional with Overton High School. Taylor pitched the first five innings of the game and led 7-3 when he moved to left field. In the sixth inning, he caught what would have been a grand slam homerun with his back to the left field wall. Did I tell you that he was 3 for 3 with five RBIs, including a three run homer? Mt. Juliet plays Siegal High School in Murfreesboro in the State Tournament on Tuesday at 6:00 PM.

Welcome home to Jennifer Neely. Jennifer serves as Career and Personal Counselor in the Center for Leadership, Calling, and Service at Trevecca Nazarene University. She has just returned from a ten day mission trip to Nicaragua where she led a TNU Student Mission Team. The group directed a VBS; performed manual labor in extreme heat; and showed the Jesus film. It was one of the first groups to work in this mission church plant.

Kim Vann is sponsoring a sewing camp for girls who have just completed grades 5-12. The dates are July 6-9, 2009, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. The location is HCN. The cost of the class is free, but students will need to purchase supplies on a provided list. If you have a sewing machine, bring it. If you do not have a sewing machine, please inform Kim and she will attempt to locate one for you to use. (If you are reading this and would be willing to loan your machine so that a young girl could learn a skill, please contact Kim.) The class is limited to the first 12 girls who register. If more than 12 register, another class will be scheduled. Register at kimvann.me.com. She will send you the supply list.
The LiveWire and Building One Dinner Theatre drew three hundred plus people on Sunday, May 17, 2009, in the 5:00 PM meal and presentation. Teresa Vines told me an incredible story of taking a group of the students to local businesses last week and letting them do “the ask” for donated goods. Some businesses ignored them. The following businesses/individuals provided all the food: Baskin Robbins/Dunkin Donuts, Fazoli’s, Golden Corral, Panera Bread (Providence, Hermitage), Sysco and Greg Trotter, Rusty Waffird. All the money received was profit and helps to finance summer camp/mission trips for teens. The best estimate to date is $2,200. I do not have a list of parents or teens who slaved in the kitchen to serve us all but I was the last person in line and their backs were broken when I came through for food. Thank you.

Diane Cater and Christine Helm wrote that crazy material for the teens to act/sing/
dance. I actually understood some it. I consider it a cultural triumph. This is the Dinner Theatre Troop: Hope Elkins, Brooke Elkins, Caleb Foster, Kevin Helm, Jessica Smithson, Seth Alderman, Sara Drummond, Jessica Perkins, Cassie Hunt, Reed McCoy, Grant McCoy, Avie Joyce, Bryson Fox, Joshua Cater, Clarissa Davis, Anna Waller, Abbie Winfree, Bret Washing, Brittany Crues, Ashley Crues, Anna-Laura Green, Sophia Green, Isabella Green, Bethany Ruff, Rachel Jones, Daniel Jones, Kelli Rose, Evan Hollingsworth, Jessie Joyce, Corey Miranne, Will Miranne, Emily Paddon, Kristin Paddon, Kenzie Eiseman, Ben Mabry, Hunter Steinmetz, Jonathan Tigabu, Josh Elkins, Jonathan Mowry, Hannah Jackson, Christi Fite, Shelby Combs, Hannah Garrett, Nathaniel Jackson, Maggie Hollingsworth, Ryan Mahoney, Jared Mannen. Thank you.

Hermitage Church completes her large mission responsibilities over the next weeks and needs your assistance and attention. If you have giving to catch up and are able, it would be a great time. If you have a mission pledge to catch up and are able, it would be an especially great time. This Sunday’s giving was strong but it only works to catch up the weeks that are weak. Thanks to every individual, every family who honors God with tithes and offerings given to the church.

I am always surprised at the evil which can be accomplished when we believe we are alone in pain and suffering. Temptation. Sickness. Unemployment. Depression. Betrayal. Broken relationships. The truth is as long as we trust in God, we are never alone. If the devil has been whispering in your ear lately, tell him to back off. Tell him in the name of Jesus. And keep on doing all the right things you already know to do.

May 11, 2009

Congratulations to Scott and Jennifer Mullins on the birth of their son, Tristan Scott Mullins, on Monday, May 11, 2009, at 10:06 AM at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Tristan weighed 6 lbs 12 ozs and measured 19 ½ inches in length. He is the brother of Brooke Bradley; grandson of Lamar and Joy Bradley; nephew of Kim and Kevin Davenport; cousin of Cameron and Carson Davenport. He was taken to the NICU immediately after birth to suction fluids and to make sure his breathing remains strong. We give thanks to God for the care Tristan has received and for the safety of Jennifer in the birth process. I get to see all of the family later today.

Wendell Poole began several years ago to arrange for the purchase of HCN’s Mother’s Day flowers from a Mennonite farm. The flowers are delivered to the doors of the church. When we asked Wendell to help this year, he asked for help in return. His mother is a resident at Trevecca Towers and she was responsible for arranging for a Tower’s chapel speaker on Thursday, May 7, 2009. Wendell asked if someone from the church could help. Rondy, Carol, Shane, and I were involved in district meetings in Dickson on Thursday and Friday, so we asked Daniel Smith and Jake Resor if they could speak. Ken Jewett joined them for the morning and by the time they each spoke, there was responsive, spiritual chatter. That means “Amen” and “Hallelujah” and “I knew you when you were a baby.” Everyone who reported back to me said it was a godly moment. It is a blessing to know that arranging Mother’s Day flowers this year begat more blessings. Thanks to Wendell, Daniel, Jake, and Ken for jobs well done.

The Doxology was added to the close of worship in first service last week due to a suggestion from our First Service Dinner and Dr. Sam Green. Willard Brinkman and I planned before service for him to play and I asked Richard Knox during the distribution of communion if he would lead us. I know that magical is not a very spiritual word but it is the word I used later to tell my family what it felt like. Richard’s voice was big and wonderful and Willard’s playing was the best of high church. In a completely different setting at the close of second service, we sang The Doxology acappella and we sang it twice through. I had an email this morning saying “the first time we sang it through, it was kind of just from memory and just singing along, but the second time, when I paid attention to the words…” God moves in mysterious ways.

Thanks to Andy McCormick for the saxophone in second service on Sunday. It was soulful and added just what was needed for the simple choir song. Paul Vann and Sam Green added the charisma.
I learn from repetition. It does not offend me. If it offends you, forgive me. This Sunday, May 17, 2009, is the day for Annual Meeting Elections. Ballots are available in Adult Sunday School Classes and at the Welcome Centers in both The Sanctuary Foyer and The Center Lobby during Sunday School and before and after services. Miriam McMillan serves as the elected Secretary of the Church Board and is responsible for appointing a Board of Tellers to handle all voting procedures. If you are a member of the church and you are fifteen years of age or older, you are eligible to vote on all ballots. On NYI (Youth) Ballots, you must be twelve to forty years of age (or work in an active capacity with youth who are 12-23 years of age). We elect five members of the church board to a three year term; three department heads (Sunday School, Missions, Youth) to a one year term; thirteen delegates to District Assembly; twelve delegates to NMI (Mission) Convention; six delegates to NYI (Youth Convention).

District Assembly begins on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at 7:00 PM, at Trevecca Community Church of the Nazarene. It is likely that Carol Waller and Bryce Fox will be ordained as elders in the Church of the Nazarene in that service. Shane Tarter will receive the grant of his first district license. I tell you that in case you would like to be present and reserve the date on your calendar.

I look forward to singing and praying and being with you on Sunday.

Pastor Howard

May the investment you have made in your education change your life and the world for good.

Congratulations to the Building One Bombers Softball Team on winning their first game of the season on Monday, April 27, 2009, at Mundy Park in Mt. Juliet. They beat Grace UMC from Mt. Juliet by the score of 13 to 11.

I asked last week for more information regarding the Country Music Marathon run on Saturday, April 25, 2009. Congratulations to Adam Jones (Lakeview, 3rd grade), who ran in the kid’s marathon at his best time of 7 minutes 20 seconds (stop watch by Mom). He is pumped for next year.

Taylor Haydel pitches in the District 9-AAA Baseball Tournament for Mt. Juliet High School this Tuesday night if rain allows. His last game was a 4-1 win over unbeaten Beech High School on Friday, April 24, 2009. That improved Taylor’s record for the season to 7-0. Mt. Juliet is 21-8 overall and 10-0 in district play. The Lebanon Democrat recorded that while Taylor starred on the mound, “Logan Dalton was the main man on the plate.” Logan was involved in all 4 runs scored by Mt. Juliet against Beech. Kudos to Taylor and Logan.

Ronnie Thompson was installed as the Senior Pastor of Twin Lakes Church of the Nazarene in Mountain Home, Arkansas, on Sunday, May 3, 2009. Ronnie called me in the afternoon and Jennifer sent me an email today to tell me how wonderful the service was. She said when District Superintendent Barney Baggott prayed over them, she wept to think of how far they have come and of HCN’s involvement in their lives. Jenni, Ben, and Shelby are back to Tennessee until school is out and then they move to Arkansas.
Dr. Rob Staples and his wife visited first service on Sunday, April 26, 2009. The Staples live in Leawood, Kansas. They were in town to help celebrate a significant birthday of Dr. William Greathouse. I told Dr. Staples that he was a hero of mine for his helpful Words of Faith. So, gentleman that he is, he wrote to express his joy in the ability to worship with us, and he sent me an autographed copy of his most recent publication. I failed to tell Dr. Staples that I re-read Outward Sign and Inward Grace before each baptism service, just to ground me in biblical theology. I enjoy meeting the friends of the esteemed Dr. G.

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 10, 2009. You are invited to bring your mom to either the 9:00 AM service in the Sanctuary or the 10:15 AM service in The Center. We have a beautiful live flower to give her and the opportunity to experience worship with her family. No services meet at HCN in the evening to encourage families to spend a Sabbath together.

Annual Elections are scheduled for Sunday, May 17, 2009, during the regular hours of morning worship services and Sunday School. Five of fifteen church board members will be elected to serve a three year term. Leaders of Sunday School, NMI (Missions), and NYI (youth) will also be elected and serve for a one year term. Delegates to District Assembly and District Conventions will be elected. Members of the local church who are fifteen years of age and older are eligible to vote on all ballots. Members of the local church who are twelve to forty years of age will be eligible to vote for the NYI (youth) ballot.

I look forward to Sunday.

In Christ Jesus,
Pastor Howard
