May 18, 2009

Congratulations to Jeffrey Butler and Suzanne Wood who were joined in marriage on Saturday, May 16, 2009, at 12:00 Noon in the sanctuary of Hermitage Church of the Nazarene. Suzanne is the daughter of Harry and Donna Wood. I had the privilege to lead this young couple through weeks of premarital counseling and then to preside at their ceremony.

Congratulations to the Mt. Juliet Middle School Boys Soccer Team which won their district tournament on Monday, May 11, 2009. Three HCN boys are members of the team: Justin Angle, Levi Carlton, and Nathanael Jackson.

Congratulations to Meagan Lavery, one of twelve people receiving Outstanding Athlete/Scholar Awards in Wilson County Schools. Meagan was awarded the single scholarship out of the twelve awards.

Congratulations to Taylor Haydel on a story book game played on Friday, May 15, 2009, in Mt. Juliet High School’s Class AAA Baseball Sectional with Overton High School. Taylor pitched the first five innings of the game and led 7-3 when he moved to left field. In the sixth inning, he caught what would have been a grand slam homerun with his back to the left field wall. Did I tell you that he was 3 for 3 with five RBIs, including a three run homer? Mt. Juliet plays Siegal High School in Murfreesboro in the State Tournament on Tuesday at 6:00 PM.

Welcome home to Jennifer Neely. Jennifer serves as Career and Personal Counselor in the Center for Leadership, Calling, and Service at Trevecca Nazarene University. She has just returned from a ten day mission trip to Nicaragua where she led a TNU Student Mission Team. The group directed a VBS; performed manual labor in extreme heat; and showed the Jesus film. It was one of the first groups to work in this mission church plant.

Kim Vann is sponsoring a sewing camp for girls who have just completed grades 5-12. The dates are July 6-9, 2009, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. The location is HCN. The cost of the class is free, but students will need to purchase supplies on a provided list. If you have a sewing machine, bring it. If you do not have a sewing machine, please inform Kim and she will attempt to locate one for you to use. (If you are reading this and would be willing to loan your machine so that a young girl could learn a skill, please contact Kim.) The class is limited to the first 12 girls who register. If more than 12 register, another class will be scheduled. Register at kimvann.me.com. She will send you the supply list.
The LiveWire and Building One Dinner Theatre drew three hundred plus people on Sunday, May 17, 2009, in the 5:00 PM meal and presentation. Teresa Vines told me an incredible story of taking a group of the students to local businesses last week and letting them do “the ask” for donated goods. Some businesses ignored them. The following businesses/individuals provided all the food: Baskin Robbins/Dunkin Donuts, Fazoli’s, Golden Corral, Panera Bread (Providence, Hermitage), Sysco and Greg Trotter, Rusty Waffird. All the money received was profit and helps to finance summer camp/mission trips for teens. The best estimate to date is $2,200. I do not have a list of parents or teens who slaved in the kitchen to serve us all but I was the last person in line and their backs were broken when I came through for food. Thank you.

Diane Cater and Christine Helm wrote that crazy material for the teens to act/sing/
dance. I actually understood some it. I consider it a cultural triumph. This is the Dinner Theatre Troop: Hope Elkins, Brooke Elkins, Caleb Foster, Kevin Helm, Jessica Smithson, Seth Alderman, Sara Drummond, Jessica Perkins, Cassie Hunt, Reed McCoy, Grant McCoy, Avie Joyce, Bryson Fox, Joshua Cater, Clarissa Davis, Anna Waller, Abbie Winfree, Bret Washing, Brittany Crues, Ashley Crues, Anna-Laura Green, Sophia Green, Isabella Green, Bethany Ruff, Rachel Jones, Daniel Jones, Kelli Rose, Evan Hollingsworth, Jessie Joyce, Corey Miranne, Will Miranne, Emily Paddon, Kristin Paddon, Kenzie Eiseman, Ben Mabry, Hunter Steinmetz, Jonathan Tigabu, Josh Elkins, Jonathan Mowry, Hannah Jackson, Christi Fite, Shelby Combs, Hannah Garrett, Nathaniel Jackson, Maggie Hollingsworth, Ryan Mahoney, Jared Mannen. Thank you.

Hermitage Church completes her large mission responsibilities over the next weeks and needs your assistance and attention. If you have giving to catch up and are able, it would be a great time. If you have a mission pledge to catch up and are able, it would be an especially great time. This Sunday’s giving was strong but it only works to catch up the weeks that are weak. Thanks to every individual, every family who honors God with tithes and offerings given to the church.

I am always surprised at the evil which can be accomplished when we believe we are alone in pain and suffering. Temptation. Sickness. Unemployment. Depression. Betrayal. Broken relationships. The truth is as long as we trust in God, we are never alone. If the devil has been whispering in your ear lately, tell him to back off. Tell him in the name of Jesus. And keep on doing all the right things you already know to do.

In Christ Jesus,
Pastor Howard
